How we research rent-to-own law
Accuracy is the whole point of this site, so we are transparent about how the information is produced and kept current.
Sources we use
For everything we say about the law, we go to the official state statute — the government's own published code — and link to it directly. We don't rely on summaries from other websites, search-result snippets, or company materials. Where a state has no specific rental-purchase statute, we say so plainly rather than guessing, and explain what general law may still apply.
Verifying and dating
Each state's information lists the statute it is based on and a "last verified" date showing when we last checked it against the primary source. We aim to re-verify the states on a regular cycle and whenever we learn of a change in the law.
How we phrase things
We summarize the law in plain language and quote exact figures (like fee caps or time windows) where the statute states them. We describe industry practices at the category level and do not name specific companies.
Corrections
If you believe something is wrong or out of date, please tell us. We take corrections seriously, check them against the primary source, and update the page and its "last verified" date when a change is warranted.
